Farm Family Wellness Alliance

When you feel better, you farm better.

Farming is one of the toughest and most rewarding jobs on the planet—and its ups and downs can affect the whole family. Following the challenges presented by the derecho storm of August 2020, Farm Foundation and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, along with other supporters, formed the Iowa Farm Family Wellness Alliance to bring Iowa families even more resources for free, confidential support from skilled professionals who can help with a wide range of life events.

In August 2021, the program expanded its service area to include all farm families in Illinois. The Farm Family Wellness Alliance now provides access to mental health and other wellness services in both states, with the goal of continuing to expand to more states. All services are pre-paid and available to all generations within a farm family.

About the Alliance

Farm Foundation obtained funding to create a program that provides farm families with access to confidential, pre-paid, ongoing behavioral health services, including wellness coaching and counseling.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach was an essential partner in launching the program and creating awareness about these new services in Iowa.

Coaching and counseling are provided through Personal Assistance Services, an organization with a long history of helping people through various life needs and events, and is free of charge to Iowa farm families.

Iowa Farm Bureau is a Program Sponsor and Marketing Partner.

Available Support

This initiative was started as a way to provide greater access to confidential, ongoing mental health and wellness services to rural communities, particularly farm families. Families can access one-on-one coaching and counseling, including ongoing counseling sessions, to help manage anxiety, depression, stress, substance use and more. Personal Assistance Services also has many other resources to support a wide variety of life needs. It’s a great resource for support as families navigate day-to-day needs. Some examples include: health and nutrition; tobacco cessation; organization and time management; education, career and retirement planning; childcare and elder care; and more!

Get a more in-depth overview of the many types of support available by viewing this webinar hosted by Iowa Farm Bureau (free registration required).
