Extension educators and other professionals who work on public policy issues sharpen their skills in five topic areas at the 2004 National Public Policy Education Conference. Topics featured at the conference were:

  • Community-based food systems
  • Competition for water
  • Distributional equity of farm programs
  • Rural health systems
  • Agricultural trade
  • Rural entrepreneurship and economic development

The 2004 R.J. Hildreth Lecture was given by  Hal Harris of Clemson University.

This conference is designed for Extension educators and other professional who work with citizens and stakeholder groups on issues related to agriculture, the food system and rural communities. Experts explain all facets of the issues and provide participants materials they can use in public education programs.

Honored with the R.J. Hildred Award for Distinguished Career Achievement was Lynn R. Harvey of Michigan State University.

Honored with a Merit Award for Service to Public Policy Education were a team from Washington State University, who developed Canons of Practice for Public Policy Research and Education Within Washington State University's College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences. The five are Ronald C. Faas, Emmett P. Fiske, Kay E. Haaland, Robert H. McDaniel and Philip R. Wandschneider.
