Information Resources for Policy Analysis: Finding the Inside Track

November 2, 2001 (Chicago) The agricultural information system continues to expand in breadth, depth, and complexity even as new information technologies make both access to the system and use of its resources faster and less expensive than ever before. The Economic Research Service and Farm Foundation co-sponsored a conference to bring together experienced policy analysts to share their knowledge of relevant and reliable information and data resources with less-experienced analysts. "Information Resources for Policy Analysis: Finding the Inside Track" was held October 17, in Washington D.C.

Five panels of speakers discussed the information and data resources relevant to policy analysis for production agriculture and trade, agriculture and the environment, food safety, food assistance and nutrition, and rural America. In each topic area, the objective was to provide policy analysts with the "inside track" to information for their work -- knowledge of specific information and data resources, models, agencies and institutions, and key personnel that can transform daunting research tasks into routine applications of easily available information resources.

Each of the conference speakers is preparing a 1-3 page information outline covering the specific information and data resources, models, agencies and institutions, and key personnel in their topic area. These will be reproduced for participants and used to assemble a resource guide on a conference web site. This guide will be publicized by ERS through its ongoing outreach programs, the Agricultural Network Information Center (AgNIC), and the Agricultural Economics Reference Organization (AERO).
