October 2, 2001: Middle Class and Middle Income: Impact on Economic Growth, Food Consumption, and Globalization is a new symposium being organized by USDA's Economic Research Service and Farm Foundation.  The sympsoium will focus on the role of the middle class primarily in middle income country economies.

The symposium will provide an overview of the issues and highlight some potential research avenues, and review information to date on the issues related to the middle class. Two areas of interest are:

  • The relationship between the middle class, growth and poverty.
  • The relationship between the middle class, food consumption and trade.

The symposium will bring together approximately 50 researchers, businessmen and policy makers in a workshop that allows free-flowing discussion on major issues related to demand growth in middle income countries. A summary and full proceedings will be posted to this webpage and to the Economic Research Service website.
