Wendell Scales Jr.

Wendell Scales Jr. is a Ph.D. student at the University of Arkansas, where he studies Agricultural Leadership within the Department of Agricultural Education, Communication, and Technology
(AECT). A proud native of Lonoke, Arkansas, Wendell brings both personal heritage and professional expertise to transforming food and education systems, especially in disadvantaged
and rural communities.

He serves as a Graduate Research Assistant and co-advisor for Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS), and has led equity-focused innovations like the
Arkansas CommUniversity Partnerships initiative and K–12 AgriSTEM models recognized by the USDA and Yass Prize. Wendell has secured over $600,000 in public and private grants to design pathway programs that expand agricultural access for first-generation, underrepresented students.

His research spans student success, sustainable food systems, and agricultural workforce development—emphasizing education, land access, and policy as tools for change. Wendell’s future goals include leading a land-grant institution, scaling national pre-college agriculture programs, and advancing food sovereignty through inclusive research, innovation, and transformative partnerships.
