Data to Serve 21st Century Agriculture:
Expanding the Agricultural and
Resource Management Survey

The Agricultural and Resource Management Survey (ARMS)–the national overview of the economic conditions of farm businesses and households–is being expanded to the state level in the 15 largest agricultural states.

To enhance the use and quality of this expanded data, Farm Foundation and USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) partnered to present the conference: “Data to Serve 21st Century Agriculture: Expanding the Agricultural and Resource Management Survey (ARMS).” The conference was Dec. 4 and 5, 2003, in St. Louis. Conference presentations and discussion group summaries are posted here. A  summary of ARMS is also available.

This conference helped to:
• Inform state and agricultural leaders about the expanded ARMS;
• Initiate a dialogue on the challenges of measuring the economic realities of agriculture, the food system and rural America;
• Generate ideas to improve ARMS, particularly at the state level; and
• Develop long-term public-private partnerships for ARMS.

The 15 states to which ARMS is being expanded are: Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin.

ERS has initiated a newsletter to improve knowledge of the ARMS process and access to the aggregate data products. Click here to review the premier issue of that newsletter and to subscribe to it.
