Workshop on Contracting Practices in Agriculture

Farm Foundation partnered with USDA’s Economic Research Service to organize a workshop examining new and emerging contracting practices in agriculture. The May 2000 workshop explored sources of data on contracting practices, current research results and topics for future research.

The growth of production and marketing contracts as an alternative to traditional cash markets for agricultural products is changing the structure of agriculture and agribusiness.  This workshop addressed the economics of production and marketing contracts in livestock, field crops and specialty crops.

Participants were researchers in academia and at ERS, as well as decision-makers from several government agencies.  The workshop yielded a paper, posted on the ERS website, outlining the major issues in contracting in agriculture and executive summaries of the workshop sessions.
